5-7 May 2026, classes titled “The thiazolidinedione motif in drug discovery” were held at the Medical University of Białystok, led by Prof. Roman Lesyk.

The meetings had both a theoretical and practical character, combining knowledge in medicinal chemistry with laboratory experience.

On the first day, the classes were opened with a welcome address to Prof. Roman Lesyk by Prof. Barbara Mroczko, Director of the Doctoral School, Prof. Anna Moniuszko-Malinowska, Vice-Dean for Science and Evaluation, as well as Prof. Anna Bielawska and Prof. Krzysztof Bielawski, who invited the lecturer and supervised the organization of the classes.

The first two days of classes were theoretical and focused on the thiazolidinedione motif and its application in the discovery of new compounds used in medicine.

On the third day, practical classes were held at the Department of Biotechnology. Under the supervision of Prof. Lesyk, the synthesis of three new compounds, derivatives of thiazolidinedione and thiopyranothiazole, was carried out. The PhD students became familiar with the specifics of aminolysis and the hetero-Diels–Alder reaction. The obtained compounds may exhibit potential anticancer activity and will be further investigated by the team of Prof. Anna Bielawska and Prof. Krzysztof Bielawski.
