On Wednesday, June 12, 2017 at the University Teaching Hospital in Bialystok the first surgery took place in the newly created hybrid operating theatre. Cardiac surgeons inserted the aortic prosthesis ( stentgraft) for the patient.
The term "hybrid" means the combination of two or more elements in a single arrangement. This is also the case for hybrid operating rooms, which are the combination of the operating theatre and the place for minimally invasive procedures. Up to now, several places have been established in Poland in all voivodeships except Podlaskie. Now it will change, because it has just been created at the University Teaching Hospital in Bialystok. Minimally invasive endovascular procedures as well as open heart surgeries will be performed there. At any time it will be possible to change the operation method. This will increase the scope of operations and patient safety.
The basic equipment of this room consists of: special revolving operating table, anesthesia device, vital signs monitor, anesthesia depth monitor, anesthesia column, operating lamps system, modern heart and vascular angiograph, respirator, artificial lungs, special air conditioning system, cameras, and a set of surgical instruments. Comprehensive room equipment allows to perform the most complex cardiac and surgical procedures within the aorta and vessels. In an emergency, it also allows to perform open heart surgery. Room will be used by cardiologists, along with invasive cardiologists, but also vascular surgeons and radiologists.
Opening of the room, will allow the further development of cardiology and cardiac surgery based on the cooperation of cardiosurgical and cardiological groups in minimally invasive treatment of congenital and acquired cardiac defects, peri-arterial leakage, aortic aneurysms and peripheral arterial repair.
In turn, vascular surgeons want to perform joint operations there - classical and endovascular.
The total cost of the hybrid operating room reached almost 4 mln PLN. More than 1.5 million was donated by the Ministry of Health, 750 thous. PLN is the support of the City of Bialystok, over 1.5 million is the hospital own funds.
