Ilona Zaręba and Joanna Stelmaszewska with the project "Silencing protein’s expression PRODH / POX tool in the fight against cancer" won this year's edition of the Technotalent Competition of the Medical University of Bialystok.
The subject of the awarded idea is a new product constituting an innovative technical solution in the treatment of cancer with the use of modern technology. Using the shRNA method, PRODH / POX expression was reduced in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Decreased PRODH / POX expression resulted in an increase in the concentration of free proline (stress factor) in the cytoplasm, disturbances in the basic metabolic processes of the cell and consequent induction of apoptosis.
The lecturer of the project is dr Izabela Prokop, assistant professor at the Department of Drug Chemistry. The prize of 5 000 PLN was funded by the MUB’s Rector, professor Adam Krętowski.
