Since the 13th of March of 2019, the Oncology Gynecology Division (Part the University Clinical Hospital) is called University Center of Oncology. There will be more beds and better conditions for the patients.
The Oncology Gynecology Division was established a year ago and at the time had 12 beds for the patients qualified for surgery or chemotherapy for ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer and vaginal cancer. The University Center of Oncology will continue this treatment profile, but already with 24 beds. The scope of operations will be extended, also for the most difficult medical cases.
-This year has shown that we are able to help women who were directed to our hospital from other centers, often also from outside the Podlasie Voivodeship - says dr hab. Paweł Knapp. - We have the advantage of being a full-profile university hospital. We do not have to wait for consultations in other fields of medicine, at any moment we can ask doctors of other specialties for help. Thanks to this, we can do the most difficult operations in the field of oncological gynecology.
Dr hab. Paweł Knapp admits that sometimes multidisciplinary teams are needed for oncological gynecology surgeries. He also hopes that by increasing and expanding the activity of Oncology Center they will be able to develop research on gynecological cancer.
- We have started close cooperation with the Clinical Research Center of the Medical University of Bialystok - adds dr hab. Paweł Knapp. - A large ovarian cancer research project is about to begin. We hope that research into the genetics and biology of this type of cancer will give us answers to many questions. Unfortunately, ovarian cancer is still one of the most dangerous and still poorly examined cancers for women.
