The three-year ALIC4E study, whose results were published in The Lancet, was funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the University of Oxford (United Kingdom) and the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands).

The study involved 3266 primary health care clinic patients in 15 European countries. Two groups of family doctors in Poland participated in the project - from Białystok and Łódź. The coordinator of the study at the Medical University of Bialystok was prof. dr hab. Sławomir Chlabicz, head of the Department of Family Medicine. In Bialystok, the project was implemented in 12 clinics with the participation of 19 family doctors.

During the next three flu seasons, the use of the antiviral drug, oseltamivir (Tamiflu®), allows you to recover from a flu-like illness, on average, one day earlier. The elderly people with chronic diseases had more benefits by recovering 2-3 days earlier compared to people without that medicine.

The benefits of taking oseltamivir also benefit people given the medicine 48 hours after falling ill. In people who had laboratory confirmed the presence of the flu virus, there were no better results from the treatment compared to people with flu-like disease in whom no flu virus was detected. Nausea and vomiting were more common in the group of patients taking oseltamivir.
