The researchers from the Medical University of Bialystok (Piotr Roszczenko, Olga Klaudia Szewczyk-Roszczenko, Agnieszka Gornowicz, Iga Anna Iwanska, Krzysztof Bielawski, Anna Bielawska) published the article „ The Anticancer Potential of Edible Mushrooms: A Review of Selected Species from Roztocze, Poland” in Nutrients.
Natural sources are gaining importance in the treatment of many diseases, as reflected in the pharmaceutical success of naturally derived drugs such as doxorubicin and digoxin. In addition to their taste, mushrooms also exhibit nutritional and anti-cancer properties. Research confirms that certain species of edible mushrooms are rich in bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, proteins and small molecules that induce apoptosis, arrest the cell cycle, damage DNA and activate the immune system. Mushrooms from the Roztocze region show promising potential in cancer therapy, but standardisation and elimination of heavy metal contamination are required for them to be more widely used in clinical practice.
