High-quality biological material and related comprehensive data constitute the foundation for evolution of innovative biotechnological methods, investigation for potential drug targets, as well as research aimed at improving diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Biobanks, whose activities include the collection, preparation and storage of biological material under strictly controlled conditions, play a key role in providing samples with clinical data. Typically, biobanking is run by academic units, hence there is a great need to develop platforms enabling interdisciplinary collaboration between biobanks and the biomedical sector to develop a common understanding.

In order to conduct targeted actions tailored to the needs of potential users, direct partnership between biobanks and the biomedical industry at all stages of development is crucial, from basic research to the clinical application of novel therapies and diagnostic procedures. This type of cooperation has many advantages for academic biobanks by enriching university databases with the results generated by a business partner. Moreover, cooperation between academic biobanks and the biomedical industry brings direct benefits, such as maintaining the sustainability of the biobank through external sources of financing, joint publications prepared on the basis of ongoing projects, and mutual exchange of experience and knowledge.

Biobanking of biological material under standardized conditions and in accordance with developed protocols and its use in high-throughput genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic assays supports a better understanding of the pathogenesis of many diseases. Progress in expanding multiomic platforms and developing molecular imaging and innovative bioinformatics tools are the foundation of personalized medicine focused on tailoring therapy to the needs of a specific patient.
