President of the Medical Research Agency (ABM) dr hab. Radosław Sierpiński handed the Rector of the Medical University in Białystok, prof. dr hab. Adam Krętowski a check for the amount of over 10 million PLN. The money will be added to the Medical Research Support Center of the Medical University of Bialystok, which is being established at the University Children's Clinical Hospital. Thanking for the financial support, the Rector of the Medical University of Bialystok stated that the idea of establishing the Medical Research Agency was initiated a few years ago in Białystok. He added that the grants awarded by ABM are a milestone for patients in Poland.

During the meeting in Białystok, the members of the Agency's Council discussed, among other things, the plans for the development of the biomedical sector for 2021-30, the emerging Warsaw Health Innovation Hub, the directions of ABM's research activities, and the directions of development of the Polish Clinical Research Network.

In Poland, non-commercial clinical research constitute only about 2 to 3% of all registered clinical research. In Western Europe, about 30% of all clinical research is carried out in the form of NBK, which includes academic research projects or investigator-initiated research carried out by universities, scientific societies, scientific research groups or research institutes.

The main purpose of a clinical research is to confirm the safety and efficacy of the medicinal product. In recent years, the number of newly registered studies in Poland has remained stable, ranging from about 400 to 450 studies per year.

The establishment of the Medical Research Agency will contribute to a better use of the potential of Polish research centers.
