Professor Małgorzata Mrugacz is representing Poland in a project on the relationship between lifestyle, nutrition and ocular surface disease. The project is carried out within the framework of the international Tear Film Ocular Surface Society (TFOS), of which Prof Mrugacz is a global ambassador. TFOS focuses on the development of scientific research, therapeutic and diagnostic options and educational aspects of the tear film and ocular surface.

We currently exploit our eyesight intensively. Whereas in our grandparents' time screen monitors were still hardly used at all, today we spend most of the day in front of phones, tablets and computers. This has a very detrimental effect on the quality of the tear film and the surface of the eye. This civilisational change has not yet been followed by an evolutionary change to effectively protect our eyes. Above all, it is worth realising that what lands on our plate has a significant impact on the quality of our vision. Diet is therefore a key factor that has long-term significance in the prevention and development of many eye diseases, such as dry eye syndrome, myopia, cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy.

The results of the study were published in a report in the leading ophthalmology journal The Ocular Surface (IF 5.9).
