    Introductory courses with preliminary requirements

    Assumptions and aims

    of the course

    Each student should acquire knowledge about epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of eye and optic nerve diseases .
    The student should know how to carry out ophthalmological  examination of the patient. He should known etiopathogenesis of eye and optic nerve diseases and their symptoms to the extent allowing differential diagnosis and principles of treatment of these diseases.

    Surgical techniques for repairing a retinal detachment. Cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery. Surgical treatment of strabismus. Fluorescein angiography- invasive diagnostic procedure. Most common post-operative complications

     

     Common refraction errors. Optical correction.

    Diabetic retinopathy and ocular signs of arterial hypertension.

    Red and dry eye. Basic types of medicines used in ophthalmology.

    Neuroophthalmology.

    Differences in anatomy and physiology between adult and child eye.Diagnostics, symptoms and treatment of congenital cataract and congenital glaucoma. Proceeding in lacrimal sac inflammation and congenital nasolacrimal duct  obstruction.

    Proceeding in ophthalmia neonatorum.

    Retinoblastoma.

    Eye movements and their disorders. The difference between non-paralytic and paralytic squint.

    Orbital and eyelid disorders-causes,symptoms, and principles  of diagnostic and therapeutic disorders

    Glaucoma- symptoms and principles of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The symptoms, signs and treatment of uveitis. Retinal disorders.

     

     

    Cataract and glaucoma surgery. Pars plana vitrectomy.

    The management of penetrating eye trauma and chemical injury to the eye.

    Exophthalmometry. Examination of cornea and lens: slit-lamp examination, pachymetry.Gonioscopy. The direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Ophthalmic ultrasound.

    Criteria for assessing the achieved learning outcomes and the form and conditions for receiving credit:

    Attending all classes is mandatory to be granted credit for the course. Every absence must be excused by presenting a medical certificate or other certificate signed by the Dean. The absence must be overtaken with other student group. The oral evaluation (by the assistant) of the topics discussed during the day is another possibility to be granted credit for the day of absence; both - prior to the end of didactics.

    Clinical classes are evaluated twice: in the Department of Ophthalmology and in the Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology Teaching Childrens Hospital (oral – practical exam).

    To enter the final exam a student must be granted credit   for clinical classes and must have completed practical exam.

     

    The final examination in the ophthalmology is in the form of the written test and takes place in the summer examination session.  Only students who passed the practical examination will enter the final test examination.  The following grades are given for examination:

    satisfactory (3,0)                 - ³60% correct answers

    fairly good (3,5)                  - ³70% correct answers

    good (4,0)                                - ³80% correct answers  

    better than good (4,5)           - ³88% correct answers

    very good (5,0)                       - ³94% correct answers

     The retake exam is written (a test).
