The course in Pediatrics is carried out at the Department of Pediatrics and Nephrology, Department of Pediatrics, Endocrinology, Diabetes with a Cardiology Division and Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (Children Teaching Clinical Hospital).

Seminar topics endocrinology – diabetology course:
1. Diabetes of developmental age (type 1, type 2, MODY) – introduction. (Wednesday, Friday)
2. Acute complications in endocrinology and diabetes (Tuesday, Thursday).
3. The basics of type 1 diabetes therapy in children (multiple injections, pump therapy). (Wednesday, Friday)
4. Diseases of the anterior and posterior pituitary lobe of the pituitary gland in children. (Monday).
5. Current guidelines in thyroid cancer and nodular thyroid disease (Tuesday, Thursday)
Seminar topics cardiology course - in order:
1.ECG assessment – paediatric differences.
2. Child’s heart murmur – Is it a congenital heart disease?
3. Chest pain – Do children have heart attacks?
4. Congenital heart defects part I
5. Heart defects Part II. Congenital heart defects part II.
Classes start: straight after the seminar, around 8:45, with a 15-minute short written test from the basics of the seminar’s subject matter of the day.

Every group will have 2 meetings in MEDICAL SIMULATION CENTRE.

Students are oblidged to be prepared theoretically for the subject ot the meeting.
The subject of the endocrinology will be: “Obese teenager”.
The subject for the cardiology will be: “Hypertensive child”
Detailed program for the CLASSES:
Endocrinology and Diabetology Course
- Growth hormone insufficiency. Primary IGF-1 insufficiency. Pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment.
2. Adrenal diseases (congenital adrenal hyperplasia, primary adrenal insufficiency – Addison disease).
3. Diabetic ketoacidosis.
4. Hypoglycemia.
5. Ambulatory care in endocrinology and diabetology.
Cardiology Course
- Indications to echocardiography, general principles and diagnostic options.
- Echocardiography in congenital heart diseases.
- Practical classes in pediatric ECG.
- Stress test. Holter. Indications. Principles of the methods.
Contradictions. - Hypertension in children.
- Overview of the basic procedures at the Department and the competence of personnel in the field of child care, research and diagnostics (with special regard to: documentation of admission, hospitalization and discharge, medical history of the disease).
- Physical examination of children with cardiology (1 week), endocrinology and diabetes (1 week) problems. Discussion of laboratory studies on patients hospitalized in the Department. Assign selected patients for independent work and to prepare their medical history with epicrisis, recommendations, and appropriate prescriptions.
- Physical examination of children with cardiology, endocrinology and diabetes problems, discussion of laboratory and additional studies in patients hospitalized in the Department. Independent work with assigned patient.
- Medical interview taking of a child with cardiology, endocrinology and diabetes problems. Discussion of a typical interview in a child mentioned disorders: symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Independent work with assigned patient.
- Physical examination of a child with cardiology, endocrinology and diabetes problems. Schedule treatment based on laboratory results.
- Completion of the patient's medical history issued during the classes, with special attention to epicrisis, recommendations and prescriptions.

To PASS the Pediatric Classes, a Student must:
- Attend and complete all pediatric classes, lectures and seminars (taking into account e-learning). Only one justified absence (see: point 19 of the Regulations) from seminar or clinical lab per one semester is allowed, without obligation to work the absence out. Student having more than one justified absence per one semester is entitled to an individual completing of the practical classes and seminars, preferably with another group (or, if not possible, in another mode determined by the head of the department), yet until the end of ongoing semester.
- Passing two patient medical histories (1 cardiological history and 1 endocrinological/diabetological history)
- Pass all entrance short tests, which will be held after all seminars.
- Oral credit at the training assistant after the cardiology course (1 credit) and endocrinology-diabetology course (2 credit).
