    REGULATIONS OF DIDACTIC CLASSES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

    1. Student attendance is obligatory during all forms of classes (realized in the stationary mode - lectures and practical classes as well as in the online mode - seminars).

    2. “Workroom Regulations” will be binding during practical classes. The Students will get know that regulations during the first laboratory class. During laboratory classes each student must possess: an laboratory coat, indoor footwear and a workbook (available on the website of the Department of Medical Biochemistry). Preparation for classes is a condition allowing to attend them.

    The recommended handbook is Harper's Illustrated Biochemistry, edited by Robert K. Murray or Lippincott Illustrated Reviews : Biochemistry, edited by Denise R. Ferrier . The workbook entitled Biochemistry workbook for students of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Health Sciences Medical University of Białystok , edited by prof. Edward Bańkowski must be brought to practical classes.

    3. Due to the specificity of classes (weekly cycle,  practical classes) it is not always possible to make up for the absences. In such a case the form of making up for absence is agreed with the group assistant.

    One justified absence per class type (lectures, practical classes, seminars) per semester is allowed. Justification (medical certificate, dean’s leave) must be sent via email to the address of the Department of Medical Biochemistry zdbioch@umb.edu.pl). Alternatively it may be submitted in person at the Department of Medical Biochemistry within 7 days from one’s return to the University.

    Justifications submitted after this term will not be accepted.

    Documents without a handwritten or eligible signature will not be considered.

    4. During classes, no unjustified absences will be allowed.

    5. Students who are late above 15 minutes shall be considered as absent during class.

    6. Forms of passing classes:

    a) practical classes – In order to pass the practical class material student must undergo 14 written  tests - for each of them one may gain 2 points. In order to pass the laboratory classes the Student must obtain the minimum of 60% points (17 points). At the end of each semester, the Student shall be entitled to correcting one test of their choice. The term of re-taking the test will be agreed with the Assistant conducting the classes.

    b) Tests (credits)- students may obtain the maximum of 15 points for each of the four credits. Students write each test only once. There is no possibility to re-take these credits. A condition for allowing to attend the exam is obtaining the minimum of 50% points (30 points) in total from all four credits.

     

    Obtaining a high total of points from the credits translates into advantages during the final exam. If the student obtains the total sum from all the credits of:

    • 56 - 60 points - student will be exempt from taking the final exam obtaining the final grade - very good,
    • 49 - 55 points - student will be granted additional 3 points with the sum of points obtained during the final exam,
    • 43 - 48 points - student will be granted additional 2 points with the sum of points obtained during the final exam,
    • 37 - 42 points - student will be granted additional 1 point with the sum of points obtained during the final exam.

    c) Passing credits - the student who obtains less than 50% of points in total from all the credits shall have a possibility to take an additional test enabling them to take the exam. The test will cover the material from lectures and seminar from the whole year (8 open questions; 3 points per each question; passing threshold from 12 points). Points from the passing test will not be calculated into the total of points gained for the previous credits.

    7. The student who failed all the required classes cannot participate in the exam session.

    8. The final exam takes the written form and covers the material from lectures as well as the material designated for self-learning. The exam will be assessed according to the following scale:

    • 5 (very good) 29-30 points

    • 4.5 (above good) 27-28 points

    • 4 (good) 24-26 points

    • 3.5 (fairly good) 22-23 points

    • 3 (satisfactory) 18-21 points

    • 2 (failed) 0-17 points

    9. The student shall be entitled to two re-take exams. Each re-take exam will be conducted in same a form as the first examination. The points obtained thanks to the credits are not added to the total of points during re-take exams.

    10. Failure to attend the exam/re-take exam without justification will result in obtaining a failed grade.

    11. The principles of justifying absence during the exam and during re-take exams have been specified in the Regulations of Studies: “Failure to attend the exam in the established term without justification shall result in obtaining a fail grade. The justification ought to be submitted to the examiner no later than on the date of the exam and in exceptional cases - within 7 days after the exam term, however, no later than on the date of exam session end in which the exam takes place. The justification may take the form of a medical certificate or a certificate confirmed by the Dean concerning the occurrence of a fortuitous event (§ 15 sec. 13).

    12. Exam results will be communicated to students within 7 days from the date of the exam conduct. Grades from the exam are disclosed to the student in the Virtual Dean’s Office.

    13. The student is entitled to view his or her exam on the following working day from the day of obtaining a given grade for the exam in the presence of the head of Department or the person designated by him.

    14. In case of noting that the student holds or uses a prohibited form of assistance, the credit/test/exam will be discontinued for that student which will signify obtaining 0 points/fail grade without the possibility of re-taking the credit/test/exam. Detailed provisions concerning prohibited assistance can be found in the Regulations of Studies as well as within the relevant Orders of the Rector of the MUB.

    15. In case of all matters not resolved in the hereby Regulations, the provisions of the Regulations of the first-cycle, second-cycle and Uniform Master Studies at the MUB shall apply.
