    FACULTY OF MEDICINE – ENGLISH DIVISION, 4TH YEAR, ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024

     

    The course in Paediatrics is delivered at the Department of Paediatrics and Nephrology, the Department of Paediatrics, Endocrinology, Diabetology with Cardiology Division, and the Department of Paediatric Infectious Diseases (University Children's Hospital).

    LECTURE TOPICS:

    1. Urinary tract infections in children (1h).

    2. Updated guidelines for management of urinary tract infections in children (1h).

    3. Congenital defects of urinary tract (1h).

    4. Vesicoureteral reflux (1h).

    5. Proteinuria in paediatric patient (1h).

    6. Nephrotic syndrome in children (1h).

    7. Paediatric haematuria diagnosis and treatment (1h).

    8. Glomerulonephritis (1h).

    9. Viral and bacterial infections of the upper respiratory tract in children (1h).

    10. Acute diseases of the lower respiratory tract (1h).

    11. -12. Respiratory Tract Infections - Paediatric Treatment Recommendations (2h).

     

     

    SEMINARS:

    Seminars will be conducted ONLINE on blackboard platform according to schedule.

     

    SUBJECTS OF SEMINARS:

    1. Symptomatology of the respiratory system (cough, dyspnoea, wheezing, apnea, hemoptysis) (1h).

    2. Viral and bacterial infections of the upper respiratory tract (1h).

    3. Causes, symptoms, diagnostic and management rules in pneumonia in children (pneumonia, etiology of hospital-acquired and non-nosocomial pneumonia, pneumonia classification based on etiology, symptoms and management of lobular pneumonia, bronchopneumonia and interstitial pneumonia, pleuritis – causes, symptoms, diagnostics and management (1h).

    4. Acute pyelonephritis, cystitis - clinical picture, factors predisposing to recurrent urinary tract infections, the most common defects of the urinary system (1h).

     

    CLASSES:

    1. Discussion of clinical cases of patients with acute respiratory tract inflammation (colds, pharyngitis, streptococcal angina, laryngitis, tracheitis, bronchiolitis, bronchitis) (5h).

    2. Discussion of diagnostics and therapeutic management of pneumonia in children; discussion of clinical cases of lobular pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, interstitial pneumonia, and pleuritis based onpatients hospitalized at the Clinic or medical records of hospitalized patients (5h).

    3. Discussion of the diagnosis and management of a child with acute pyelonephritis, cystitis, recurrent urinary tract infections based on the analysis of medical records of patients under the care of the Nephrology Department and Out-Patient Clinic, examination of patients in the ward - analysis of factors predisposing to urinary tract infection (3h).

    4. Classes at the Department of Medical Simulations: Interview and physical examination of a child with respiratory diseases. Anomalies in the history, physical examination and additional tests in a child with respiratory diseases. Basic procedures realized in children during hospitalization. (4h).

     

     

    DETAILED PROGRAMME OF PAEDIATRICS LABS:

    8:00 – 09:00 - Short entrance test covering the topics of the particular session. Discussing the results of the test and the issues concerning the classes.

    Students should be prepared for all lab sessions, including the first day. 

    9:00 - 9:30 – Active participation in a report or ward round.

    9:30 – 11:00(11.45) –  Anamnesis and physical examination of a patients in a patient room. Discussion about the patients with the Teacher. During the labs, students prepare their medical history with epicrisis, recommendations, and appropriate prescriptions. Forms of all documents used during medical history preparation are available from the Department’s website, ”Medical History” lap. Students are required to print such forms and have them for the first lab class!!!

     

    Students will be actively involved in procedures at the Department (taking blood samples; urine for urine culture; urinary catheterization; conducting and evaluation of voiding pattern, assistance to kidney biopsy).

     

    CLASSES AT THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL SIMULATIONS 8.00 - 11.00 (CSM)

    NOTE: Each group covers 1 course day at the Department of Medical Simulations (4 hours), taught by Piotr Protas, MD, PhD - according to the class schedule (group date):

     

    Practical skills:

    1. Improvement of respiratory examination skills. Practical analysis of auscultation phenomena, laboratory and radiological tests.

    2. Improvement in assessment of basic vital parameters (breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, pulse oximetry).

    3. Improvement in bladder catheterization according to aseptic regime.

    REQUIREMENTS TO PASS THE PAEDIATRICS COURSE:

    1. See Rules & Regulations, point 28

    2. Participation in all classes is essential, inluding online seminars, lectures. It is possible to have one excused absence without making it up in another time.

    3. Credits for  short entrance tests – 3 days x 4 points = max. 12 points.

    4. Writing a patient’s Medical History during the course cycle at the Department of Paediatrics and Nephrology – max. 10 points.

    5. To recieve a credit for the whole cycle, 60% of all available points are required, 14 out of 22 points minimum.

    6. During the course cycle, students will carry out  medical procedures listed  in the Clerkship booklet on Clinical Practice Training.

     

    It is impossible to make up classes if the absence wasn't excused.
