    Detailed Paediatrics course schedule at the Department of Paediatrics and Nephrology:

     

    The course in Paediatrics is delivered at the Department of Pediatrics and Nephrology, the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy for Children and Adolescents, the Emergency Department, Night and Holiday Patient Care (University Children’s Hospital), and the Department of Medical Simulations.

     

     

    The course will proceed in accordance with the schedule (https://www.umb.edu.pl/en/s,9037/6th_year) at 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (day 1-3 and CSM), 8:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. (day 4), duty hours (afternoon classes)

     

    CLASSES AT THE DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRICS AND NEPHROLOGY

     

    Day 1.

    8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.: Short Test

    8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.: Pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical symptoms, diagnostics and therapeutic procedures in urinary tract infections and  the most common urination disorders in children (primary bedwetting, secondary urination disorders, neurogenic bladder, overactive bladder). Principles of performing urodynamic examination, uroflowmetry, urotherapy (4hrs).

     

    Day 2.

    8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.: Short Test

    8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.: Diagnostics and therapeutic standards in a child patient with haematuria, proteinuria in the course of glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, genetically determined kidney diseases - analysis of medical records of patients under the care of the Nephrology Department and Out-Patient Clinic, examination of patients in the ward - writing an epicrisis, a follow-up treatment plan for a patient (4hrs).

     

    Day 3.

    8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.: Short Test

    8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.: Diagnostic and therapeutic standards in a child patient with arterial hypertension of renal origin and renovascular hypertension - analysis of medical records of patients under the care of the Nephrology Department and Out-Patient Clinic, examination of patients in the ward, outpatient monitoring of blood pressure (4hrs).

     

    Day 4.

    8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.: Short Test

    8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.: Diagnostics and therapeutic standards in a child patient with acute renal failure and chronic kidney disease on the basis of medical records of patients under the care of the Nephrology Department and Out-Patient Clinic, examination of patients at the ward, visits at dialysis centres for children, principles of peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis  (3hrs).

     

     

    During the labs students prepare the patient’s medical history (including epicrisis, recommendations, prescriptions).

     

     

    During lab class practice, students work with patients assigned to them specifically and learn the following practical skills:

    1. Work with a diagnostic patient, with the focus on assessment in the course of one-day inpatient hospital stays. Scheduling and taking tests, Planning of medical examination, active participation in their implementation, analysis of results, preparation of discharge summary documentation.

    2. Simultaneously maintaining patient admission, stay and discharge records (patient medical history forms are available from the Department’s website). Participation in a briefing.

    3. Working with patients at outpatient clinic (discussion of the available testing/examination range at the Department, types of records used in outpatient specialist care, based on the patient registered in the system). A visit to the Outpatient Nephrology Clinic.

    4. Detailed description of procedures delivered at the Department (urodynamic examination, kidney biopsy, 24-hour monitoring of blood pressure, blood pressure assessment through one-off measurements, bladder catheterization, gastric tube probing, intravenous injection, giving an enema, pulse measurement, connecting a cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter) .

    5. Analysis of laboratory and radiological tests of patients hospitalized at the Department. Active participation in patient diagnostic tests.

    6. Preparing patient's medical history with differential diagnosis and full discharge documentation, writing out prescriptions, planning further care for a patient discharged from the Department.

     

     

    CLASSES AT THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL SIMULATIONS – the responsible contact person is Piotr Protas, MD, PhD (piotr.protas@umb.edu.pl)

    Class subjects at the Department of Medical Simulations (4hrs):

    8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. - Use of laboratory tests in nephrology. Detailed discussion of laboratory and radiological tests for nephrology (interpretation of urinalysis, urine culture, peripheral blood morphology, renal function parameters, inflammatory parameters, ultrasound, radiological, scintigraphic and pathomorphological tests in nephrological diagnostics). Urolithiasis; diagnostic and therapeutic standards for renal colic in children.

     

     

    AFTERNOON CLASSES AT THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL (ON DUTY) (3HRS): Please contact with: Marlena Waszkiewicz-Stojda, MD, PhD, marlena.waszkiewicz@udsk.pl for the schedule of classes.

    Principles of dealing with a pediatric trauma patient at the Children's Trauma Center, treatment of acute poisoning in children, management of selected emergencies in children (cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, convulsions, shock) - classes at the Emergency Department of the University Children’s Clinical Hospital  in the afternoon (on duty)

     

    SEMINARS (SOLVING OF PRACTICAL CLINICAL PROBLEMS):

    1. Urinary tract infection and voiding disorders in children. (2h)

    2. Hematuria and proteinuria in children – differential diagnosis. (2h)

    3. Young patient with hypertension. (2h)

    4. High serum creatinine concentration and then what? (2h)

    5. Questions from pediatric part of medical examination (LEK) – solving and discussion. (2h)

    Requirements to pass the course in Paediatrics:
