Rules and Regulations for the Biophysics course
Didactic Regulations
- Attendance is mandatory for all types of classes (conducted both on-site and online).
- Organization of classes:
a) Didactic classes in Biophysics are conducted in the form of lectures, seminars, and laboratory classes.
b) The didactic course begins with a cycle of four seminars, held in seminar groups according to the schedule available on the website of the Department of Medical Biophysics.
c) Lectures in biophysics (10 hours) are conducted online according to the schedule available on the Department of Medical Biophysics website.
d) Laboratory classes in biophysics are divided into three thematic modules, with three experiments per section (a total of nine), conducted in the building of the Department of Medical Biophysics, in exercise groups. A detailed schedule of classes is available on the Department’s website. - Before entering the laboratory room, students are required to wear a clean lab coat and change shoes.
- Unexcused absences are not allowed.
- Absences are excused on the basis of a medical certificate, dean’s leave, or a written statement confirming a random unforeseen event. Justification must be submitted to the head of the unit within 7 days from the end of the circumstances causing the absence. Missed classes must be redone, with the time and method determined individually with the instructor.
- Being late for more than 15 minutes is considered an absence.
- Laboratory classes, seminars, and lectures end with a test (colloquium), which students may take only if they have completed all exercises and participated in all lectures and seminars, or redone any absences.
a) The condition for passing a laboratory exercise is the student’s demonstration of theoretical background of the prepared material, correct performance of the experiment (individually or in a group), analysis of results, and presentation of conclusions in the Biophysics Handbook. Passing is confirmed by the instructor’s signature in the appropriate table.
b) Failed exercises must be retaken before the date of the colloquium.
c) During each exercise, a student may earn up to 2 additional points for activity and above-average knowledge (maximum 18 points in total).
d) It is possible to earn up to 2 additional points during lectures by creating a short film popularizing the use of physics in medicine (details available from the lecturer).
e) The colloquium is conducted in the form of a multiple-choice test consisting of 50 questions (10 questions from each of the three laboratory modules and 20 questions from lectures). Each correct answer earns 1 point. - The final grade is based on the sum of additional points and points earned in the colloquium. The maximum number of points is 70 (50 from the colloquium, 18 from laboratory classes, and 2 from the lecture film).
- A minimum of 30 points is required to be admitted to the exam.
- If the final score is below 30 points, the student has the right to retake the colloquium twice. Retakes are conducted in the same form as the original colloquium. If the final score after retakes remains below 30, the student is not admitted to the exam.
- Students who achieve 56 points or more after the first colloquium are exempt from the exam and receive the grade very good (5).
- An unexcused absence from the colloquium results in 0 points.
- Absences from the colloquium are excused based on the same rules as class absences (medical certificate, dean’s leave, or unforeseen event, with justification submitted within 7 days).
- Passing the course requires taking the exam. The exam (first and two retake terms) is conducted as a test with both multiple-choice and open-ended questions (descriptive and calculation-based).
- Exam grading scale:
% of exam points | Grade |
0–59 | 2 (fail) |
60–68 | 3 (satisfactory) |
69–76 | 3+ (satisfactory plus) |
77–84 | 4 (good) |
85–90 | 4+ (good plus) |
91–100 | 5 (very good) |
- Each student has the right to two exam retakes. Retakes are conducted in the same form as the original exam.
- Failure to appear at the exam or retake without justification results in a failing grade.
- Rules for excusing exam and retake absences are defined in the Study Regulations.
- Exam dates (basic and two retakes) are set by the Department of Medical Biophysics.
in consultation with the student representative. It is permissible to set one additional date for all students who excused their absence from any of the previous dates. This date will take place in March (no later than March 31st). No additional exam dates other than those established in accordance with the above rule will be set. - The results of colloquia and exams are announced within 14 days of the test date. Results are published as a file in the course content on the Blackboard platform.
- Students have the right to review their written work at a time agreed upon by the Department of Medical Biophysics and the class representative, in the presence of the head of the unit or an authorized representative.
- If a student is found possessing or using unauthorized assistance, the colloquium/exam is immediately terminated, resulting in 0 points/a failing grade, without the possibility of a retake. Details on unauthorized assistance are specified in the Study Regulations and Rector’s Ordinance.
- In matters not regulated by these Regulations, the provisions of the Regulations of First-Cycle, Second-Cycle, and Long-Cycle Master’s Degree Studies at UMB apply.
