We are pleased to announce that the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland has granted another patent to the Medical University of Bialystok.

Invention entitled “The miRNA biomarkers for the differential diagnosis of histopathological subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer” were developed thanks to the cooperation of a scientific team composed of: dr hab. Radosław Charkiewicz, prof. dr hab. Jacek Nikliński, dr hab. Joanna Reszeć, dr hab. Mirosław Kozłowski, dr hab. Attila Gyenesei, dr. Anetta Sulewska and Bence Gálik, MA.

Using next-generation sequencing technology and bioinformatics tools, scientists selected micro RNA (miRNA) biomarkers to diagnose non-small cell lung cancer subtypes. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, and non-small cell lung cancer is one of the most common types. The two main cancer subtypes are adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Appropriate subtype identification allows for the implementation of an effective treatment regimen and increased therapeutic benefit. The results of routine histopathological examinations are often inconclusive or do not allow the correct diagnosis of the tumor subtype. The identified miRNA biomarkers are a precise tool to differentiate these two cancer subtypes, thanks to which the invention will support proper diagnosis, which is a key element in the implementation of personalized therapies.

We congratulate the researchers and wish them further scientific successes!
