We are pleased to announce a new patent obtained on behalf of the Medical University of Bialystok by Prof. Anna Bielawska, Prof. Krzysztof Bielawski and Dr. Anna Szymanowska. The patented compounds were created thanks to scientific cooperation with Mariusz Mojzych, PhD, of the Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities, and dr Katarzyna Kotwica-Mojzych and Zofia Bernat from Medical University of Lublin.

The patented disulfonamide derivatives exhibit anticancer activity, particularly against breast cancer cells, enabling more effective therapy. About 19,000 women in Poland are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. According to a report by the National Institute of Health, the death rate from this kind of cancer increased by 7.2% in Poland between 2010 and 2016.

After surgery, each patient is taken into consideration for classical chemotherapy, hormonal drugs or modern molecularly targeted drugs. Systemic treatment is particularly applicable in cases where distant metastases are found. Such treatment alleviates the symptoms of advanced cancer, it can also lead to remission of metastatic foci and prolong life.

Ongoing in vitro studies have demonstrated the high biological activity of the newly synthesized derivatives. These compounds exhibit potent cytotoxic, cytostatic and antiproliferative activity, particularly against breast cancer cells, indicating their potential use in treatment.
