A new publication by researchers from Medical Universities in Bialystok (Malgorzata Pawinska), Poznan, San Antonio (USA), Toronto (Canada), and scientists from the research department of Dr. Wolff Group in Bielefeld (Germany) has been published in the renowned dental journal Journal of Dentistry (Elsevier). The publication concerns calcium hydroxyapatite—an active ingredient found in oral care products (toothpastes and mouth rinses) used for caries prevention. A unique feature of this ingredient is its structural similarity to natural enamel crystals.

The aim of the publication was to evaluate the effectiveness of hydroxyapatite in caries prevention based on clinical and in situ studies. To achieve the goal, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of literature available in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science.

After an extensive literature review, five clinical studies and eight in situ studies were included in the meta-analysis. These studies demonstrated that toothpastes containing hydroxyapatite are as effective in preventing caries as fluoride toothpastes. Hydroxyapatite effectively remineralizes carious lesions and significantly reduces bacterial adhesion to the tooth surface. Additionally, it is a potent active agent in caries prevention. Even if accidentally swallowed, it is safe, making it an ideal ingredient for oral care products not only for adults but also for infants and children.
