The Medical Simulation Center has gained a valuable device, which is the latest generation simulator that uses VR virtual reality for teaching dentistry.
Simodont Dental Trainer, purchased as part of the project "Implementation of the development program of the Medical University of Bialystok with the use of the Medical Simulation Center", Operational Program Knowledge Education Development, Priority axis V. Support for the area of health, measure 5.3, was installed in the simulation laboratory of the Department of Propaedeutics of Dentistry. The MSC employees had the opportunity to learn how to use Simodont during an internship at the Academic Center for Dentistry in Amsterdam, where this device was created and is successfully used, as well as all over the world.
This advanced dental simulator based on haptic virtual reality technology is a kind of bridge between working on the phantom and clinical practice. Working on it improves the precise psychomotor skills necessary to perform the profession. Simodont enables participants to train general manual dexterity thanks to the haptic tool for creating a realistic sense of touch and a three-dimensional image of the object. This highly realistic tactile feeling of various objects and materials is provided by the contact of a virtual drill during operation. In addition, the feedback system allows for an objective evaluation and self-evaluation of the student's work in real time. An additional benefit is to force and consolidate the correct, ergonomic body position during the procedure.
The possibility of using modern solutions in didactics will certainly contribute to improving the quality of education in the medical and dental faculty at MUB.
