We cordially invite you to watch the latest production from the series "MUB This is us - I'll tell you my story" with the story of prof. Andrzej Kaliciński, Rector of the Medical Academy of Bialystok in 1990-1993.
Professor Andrzej Stanisław Kaliciński was born on 14 March 1922 in Granica, then located in the Kieleckie Voivodeship. His youth was associated with the city of Płock. In 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland, as a 17-year-old boy he participated as a volunteer in defence of Warsaw. After the war, he started studies at the Gdańsk Medical Academy that had just started to operate. In 1951, he graduated with a Diploma in Medicine. Already during his studies, he started to work under the guidance of the distinguished biochemist, Professor Włodzimierz Mozołowski, and obtained his PhD in 1952. Under a work order, he was transferred to Silesia, continuing his research work there, as well as working as a doctor in the City Hospital in Gliwice. In 1953, on his own request and with a consent of the Ministry of Health, he moved to the Medical Academy of Bialystok. Initially, he worked at the 1st Internal Medicine Clinic of AMB, and then, in 1960, he began working at the 2nd Internal Medicine Clinic of AMB, managed by Professor Jakub Chlebowski. In 1970, he was appointed a head of the newly established Cardiology Clinic at AMB. In 1963, he received a title of docent, and in 1975 he was appointed associate professor at AMB. As a part of his activities in the union, Professor A. Kaliciński participated in formation of the university organisation NSZZ Solidarność AMB in 1980. In 1990–1993, already in the new political reality in Poland, Professor Andrzej Kaliciński was the AMB rector. In 1992, he received a title of full professor. He managed the Cardiology Clinic until his retirement in 1993. At that position, Professor A. Kaliciński became, for example, an advocate and an organiser of help for Polish people living in “the East” in the field of medical education and improvement of their medical qualifications. The Professor was also a promoter of medical knowledge in cardiovascular diseases and civilizational threats. He died on 4 April 2002.
