In accordance with the electoral calendar adopted by the Senate of the Medical University of Bialystok on January 18, 2024, the University Electoral Commission accepted applications for candidates for the position of Rector of the Medical University of Bialystok for the 2024-2028 term, on March 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The Commission received one application from prof. Marcin Moniuszko. The application was submitted by a representative of the University Council: prof. Irina Kowalska. The candidate received a unanimous positive opinion from the MUB Senate at its meeting on March 5, 2024.

Prof. Ph.D. Marcin Moniuszko graduated with honors from the Medical faculty of the Medical Academy of Białystok. During his studies, he was a member of the choir, the student scientific club, Academic Sports Association and worked at Radio Akadera and Polish Radio Białystok. He was the recipient of the Primus Inter Pares Gold Badge. After graduation, he completed several scientific internships abroad, including 3 years of work in the United States at the prestigious National Cancer Institute (Bethesda), part of the National Institutes of Health. In the United States, Marcin Moniuszko investigated the mechanisms of immune disorders in the course of retroviral infections and the possibilities of using modern immunomodulatory therapies based on vaccinations and administration of cytokines. After returning from the United States, in 2004 he received a scholarship from Polityka Weekly Magazine, and in 2005 - a scholarship from the Foundation for Polish Science. In 2005, he obtained a doctoral degree based on the dissertation "Assessment of the impact of interleukin-7 administration on the phenotype and function of T lymphocytes - experimental studies." In 2010, on the basis of his scientific achievements to date and his submitted thesis "The influence of chronic allergic airway inflammation and steroid therapy on the phenotype of monocytes/macrophages and T lymphocytes", he obtained the academic degree of doctor habilitated in medical sciences in the field of medicine. In 2016, he received the title of professor based on his entire scientific achievements. Since 2004, he has been working at the Clinical Department of Allergic and Internal Diseases, and since 2018 he has been its Head. He specializes in internal diseases and allergology. In 2012, he created the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Immune Regulation at MUB.
Marcin Moniuszko is a full professor at the Medical University of Białystok. Since 2016, he has been vice-rector for science (since 2019 - vice-rector for science and development) of the MUB. Previously, he was the Head of Doctoral Studies at the Faculty of Health Sciences, and later co-organized the first biomedical and biostatistical community doctoral studies in English at the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy. He was the manager of one of the few European Commission Cofund grants in Poland under the Horizon 2020 program "Impress. Supporting the career and training in omic-based research and biostatistics by international and intersectoral mobility", under which further interdisciplinary international English-language doctoral studies in the area of biomedical sciences and biostatistics were created.
He is a co-author of the concept of establishing the Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine at the Medical University of Bialystok. He is also the main author of the application containing the concept of scientific development of the MUB, awarded by a foreign panel of experts as part of the Initiative for Excellence - Research University (IDUB) competition.
Since 2018, he has been a member of the Management Board, and since 2021 he has been the vice-president of the Polish Society of Allergology. In the years 2019-2024 he was the chairman of the Council of the Medical Research Agency. He was a member of the board of the Białystok Branch of the Polish Society of Experimental and Clinical Immunology. He was awarded, among others: awards of the Minister of Health, the Rector of the Medical University of Bialystok, the Special Award of Prof. Jan Sznajda Foundation for the Development of Laboratory Diagnostics for outstanding achievements in laboratory diagnostics.
Professor Moniuszko is a reviewer of renowned journals on immunology, allergology and cell biology, as well as a member of the editorial committees of, among others, Stem Cell Reviews and Reports and the Central European Journal of Immunology. He is also the author and co-author of numerous works describing the role of changes in the genomic and metabolome profile in the pathogenesis, course and response to treatment of a number of lifestyle diseases. He has published numerous publications in prestigious scientific journals, including Nature Communications, Blood, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Allergy, Journal of Immunology, Cancer and Metastasis Reviews, Molecular Cancer, Cancer Letters and many others.
The most important scientific achievements of prof. Moniuszko is:
- Demonstration of significant relations between the modification of the genomic and metabolomic profile and the clinical picture of selected cancer diseases, COVID-19 and other lifestyle diseases
- Identification of new immunomodulatory mechanisms of steroid therapy in respiratory diseases
- Demonstrating significant relationships between various types of stem cells and the immune system in the course of immune-related diseases
- Demonstrating the important role of monocytes, various subpopulations of T and B lymphocytes and various cytokines in the pathogenesis of AIDS, allergy, asthma, cancer, autoimmune diseases and others
- Identification of new immune biomarkers for prognosis in hematological malignancies
- Identification of new roles of microRNAs in the pathogenesis of cancer, coordinating the immune response, and the functions of stem cells in cancer.
Prof. Moniuszko is interested in popularizing science and medicine, history, music, and landscape photography of Podlasie Region
