A hall of the Philharmonic Hall filled to the last seat, an inaugural speech uniting the academic community, wishes for further development from invited guests and an extraordinary lecture by Michał Rusinek - on Friday, 4 October 2024, the Medical University of Bialystok inaugurated the University's 75th anniversary year.
In the latest scientific evaluation, the Medical University of Bialystok received some of the highest grades in the country; pharmaceutical sciences received an A+ category and medical sciences, as well as health sciences, received an A category. The university was the winner of the jubilee ranking of academic universities ‘Perspektywy 2024’, receiving the distinction of Advancement of the Year.
During the ceremony, the Rector, Prof. Moniuszko, often emphasised that we form a great academic community consisting of current and former students, doctoral students, current and former academic teachers, scientists of all levels, clinicians, administrative staff and our Alumni.
The University has started a new tradition - the presence of former Rectors in the official ceremonial procession, and during the inaugural speech Prof. Moniuszko recalled Prof. Tadeusz Kielanowski, who created the Medical Academy, now the Medical University of Bialystok. He spoke about Rector Zbigniew Puchalski and Rector Jan Górski, who sat on the stage next to Rector Moniuszko, as well as Prof. Jacek Nikliński and Prof. Adam Krętowski. The Honorary Doctors Prof. Ida Kinalska and Prof. Marian Szamatowicz were also mentioned. It is on your shoulders and those of your colleagues that we are building the future today. Without you, we would not be here,’ added the new MUB Rector.
Inauguration speech
Rector Marcin Moniuszko emphasised that the University is not only a caring custodian of its beautiful tradition, a generous host of the most beautiful monument of the city and the region, i.e. the Branicki Palace, which is open to the public. What does this University have in it? Who are the people who make it up? It is the 6,000 employees of the University and our teaching hospitals. 6,000 students, including 500 from abroad, 230 doctoral students.
Professor Moniuszko pointed out that students are the most important for the University, which is why MUB is embarking on three major didactic investments: the Didactic and Examination Centre (at Szpitalna Street), the Centre for Basic Sciences (at Mickiewicza Street) and the Nursing Centre along with the Medical Simulation Centre (at Żurawia Street).
Necessary investments
The Rector reiterated how much investment is needed to care for elderly patients, especially those burdened by multi-morbidity, including cancer.
The Rector's speech was followed by speeches by, among others, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Health Katarzyna Kacperczyk, who pointed to the leading role of the Medical University of Bialystok in shaping an increasingly better quality of the health care system in Poland.
Professor Maria Mrówczyńska, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, also spoke. There were words of support and encouragement for the new academic year from Podlasie Province Governor Jacek Brzozowski, Deputy Marshal of Podlasie Wiesław Burnos and Mayor of Bialystok Tadeusz Truskolaski. Many teaching and scientific successes were wished in the letters sent by, among others: Speaker of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia, Deputy Speaker of the Senate Maciej Żywno, MP Alicja Łebkowska-Gołaś, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Stefan Krajewski, President of CRASP Prof. Bogumiła Kaniewska.
Matriculation of undergraduate and postgraduate students
Sixteen first-year students, representatives of the 16 faculties at MUB and new PhD students at the Doctoral School, were asked to take the oath. These are the people who achieved the best results in the recruitment process. In this way, they officially joined the prestigious group of students at the Medical University of Bialystok, one of the best medical universities in the country. Among those honoured (asked to matriculate and give a speech on stage) were representatives of a strong group of around half a thousand foreign students - the English Division.
This is a very special moment for us, one that we have been looking forward to for a long time,' commented newly matriculated student of medicine, Kacper Rosa. Behind us were long months of demanding preparations for matriculation, followed by equally long holidays, and now a completely new chapter in our lives begins, a huge challenge, but also curiosity about the university, the world and science. All this is still very much alive in us.
Marianna Ciwun, a first-year PhD student at the MUB Doctoral School, added that with the advancement of science and medicine, including the pharmaceutical disciplines she represents, she hopes to influence the introduction of innovative solutions that save people's lives: I would like what we do here to have a real impact on people's lives and health. That's what we're getting our degrees for, our qualifications, to make a real difference,’ she added after the ceremony.
